Takeshi Niinami, known for his candid critiques of Japan’s corporate landscape, has stepped down as the CEO of Suntory Holdings Inc. following a police raid at his residence concerning illegal drug purchases.

The police investigation center on Niinami, 66, who is being scrutinized for allegedly buying a supplement containing cannabis, according to Suntory President Nobuhiro Torii. During a rapid press conference held in Tokyo on Tuesday, Torii announced the resignation and provided details of the situation. Niinami has publicly denied the allegations, as reported by Tokyo Shimbun earlier that day. He chose not to comment when approached by Bloomberg reporters for further information.
