With the 2025 NFL season looming just ten days away, teams face tough roster decisions as the league-wide deadline approaches. By 4 PM ET on Tuesday, all 32 teams are required to trim their preseason rosters from 90 players down to the final 53. This means that a total of 1,184 players will find themselves without a job by the end of the cut day. As teams make these tough choices, many players will be in search of new opportunities.
Players with fewer than four accrued seasons must first go through waivers, where the Tennessee Titans will have the top priority due to their draft position. In contrast, veterans with four or more years of experience automatically become free agents upon their release.
While roster cuts will take center stage in the headlines, team trades are also anticipated before the Tuesday deadline. The Philadelphia Eagles, for instance, have already completed three trades over the weekend.
Among the various players affected, here are eleven of the most high-profile cuts so far:
1. Tyler Huntley, QB, Browns: The former Ravens backup and Pro Bowl alternate had been competing for a depth position in Cleveland but ultimately did not make the cut.
2. La’el Collins, OL, Cowboys: Once a key player on Dallas’ offensive line, Collins’ recent struggles with injuries led to his release, and he may attract interest from teams seeking veteran linemen.
3. Shilo Sanders, DB, Buccaneers: The son of Hall of Famer Deion ‘Prime Time’ Sanders was under the spotlight during the preseason. His release underscores the intense competition for roster spots in the NFL.
4. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, QB, Eagles: A fan favorite in the preseason, Thompson-Robinson couldn’t secure the backup position behind Jalen Hurts.
5. Kyle McCord, QB, Eagles: Another quarterback release in Philadelphia indicates significant changes in their depth chart.
6. Kenyon Green, OL, Eagles: The former first-round draft pick failed to meet expectations and is now seeking a new opportunity.
7. Donovan Peoples-Jones, WR, Saints: A reliable target during his time in Cleveland, Peoples-Jones was unable to find a role in the competitive Saints receiving corps.
8. Cam Akers, RB, Saints: Despite his talent, Akers has struggled with injuries, making his release a significant decision for the team.
9. Equanimeous St. Brown, WR, 49ers: Although he showed flashes of potential in Green Bay and Chicago, limited opportunities at the 49ers’ wide receiver position led to his release.
10. Mike Hilton, CB, Dolphins: A respected defensive back with considerable starting experience, Hilton’s departure is among the more surprising moves on the defensive front thus far.
11. Ryan Stonehouse, P, Dolphins: Notably, Stonehouse, who set the NFL single-season record for punting yards in 2022, has become one of the most unexpected cuts.
