As August draws to a close, Hollywood is abuzz with the latest development in a fierce bidding war for a highly sought-after television project, with Netflix emerging victorious among major streaming contenders.
This yet-to-be-titled project unites notable talents: Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, along with his former co-star Matthew McConaughey, and Yellowstone star Cole Hauser. The production is backed by Skydance Sports.
Sources indicate that Amazon, Apple, and Netflix were all vying for the project, ultimately leading to Netflix securing the deal. Contracts with McConaughey and Hauser are reportedly being finalized as development progresses.
Interestingly, HBO was not in the running, reflecting a strained relationship with Pizzolatto. Last year, he publicly criticized the network’s fourth season of the anthology series he masterminded. Meanwhile, McConaughey had previously been in discussions for a role in a potential Yellowstone spinoff, though creator Taylor Sheridan has since opted to develop a different spinoff titled The Dutton Ranch, which stars Hauser and Kelly Reilly. It’s worth noting that McConaughey and Hauser previously starred together in Richard Linklater’s film Dazed and Confused, marking significant early career breakthroughs for both actors. This new collaboration thus presents a fascinating blend of reunited talent.
While details about the project remain limited, it is informally dubbed “The Brothers Project,” as McConaughey and Hauser are expected to portray siblings. The specifics about their characters and the overall setting are still unclear, but with Skydance Sports at the helm, a sports-related theme seems likely.
This should not be mistaken for McConaughey’s other sibling-related project, which also connects to True Detective season one—an Apple TV+ comedy where he reunites with Woody Harrelson.
Netflix has not provided any comments regarding this new venture.
Looking ahead, McConaughey has a notable fall lineup as he returns to the silver screen for the first time since 2019. He will appear in The Lost Bus, a true story about the Camp Fire, directed by Paul Greengrass, which is set to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 5. He is represented by WME and Yorn Levine.

Pizzolatto will also make an appearance at TIFF this year with his own directorial effort, Easy’s Waltz, which stars Vince Vaughn and Al Pacino. He is repped by WME and Anonymous Content.
Hauser has experienced a career resurgence thanks to his role in Yellowstone, which has allowed him to pursue various film projects outside of Sheridan’s universe. He is represented by IAG and Yorn Levine.
