Taylor Swift’s recent engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce has garnered a notable response from former President Donald Trump, who had previously expressed disdain for the pop icon. During a cabinet meeting, Trump remarked that he wishes the couple “a lot of luck,” putting aside past criticisms he directed at Swift.
Initially, Trump praised Kelce as a great player and a great guy. However, his former remarks about Swift, calling her a “woke singer” and claiming she was “NO LONGER HOT,” seem to have been forgotten as he added, “And I think that she’s a terrific person.”
The long-standing tension between Trump and Swift dates back to 2018, when Swift publicly supported Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen over Republican Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee. At that time, Trump stated, “I’m sure Taylor Swift knows nothing,” and claimed that his appreciation of her music had diminished significantly.
Travis Kelce has generally refrained from commenting on Trump. Ahead of the Super Bowl in February, he described the possibility of the president attending as “awesome,” emphasizing the honor it would represent at one of the biggest events of his career.
Last September, Trump indicated a preference for Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, over Swift in his remarks. He has been vocal on social media, once expressing a belief that posting “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT” would influence popular opinion against her, saying, “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’”

In a recent episode of Kelce’s podcast, New Heights, he gushed about Swift, saying she is “so hot when she says big words.” Following the announcement of their engagement, the couple shared a post set to The Tortured Poets Department’s song “So High School,” which features lyrics highlighting their playful connection, captioned, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
